Axolotl, the Mexican Salamander - Crochet Beanie Earflap Hat

This funky and fun one of a kind design was requested by a fellow Etsian. It took me a while to work out all the details to come up with this unique earflap/beanie hat and several hours to crochet it up. With all it's features (hands, tail and feathered spikes), you will truly stand out while wearing it!

Hat is only available in ADULT and CHILD sizes right now. I have to develop the pattern to accommodate smaller sizes and hopefully can offer them at a later date.

Great for both boys and girl (men and women too). Makes a great Christmas gift or just to keep someone you love warm.

A special thank you to fellow Etsian Oukan for suggesting the hat design and motivating me to finish the project!

Axolotl (pronounced Ax-oh-lot-ul), the Mexican Salamander; Scientific name Ambystoma mexicanum, retains its larval features throughout its adult life. This condition, called neoteny, means it keeps its tadpole-like dorsal fin, which runs almost the length of its body, and its feathery external gills, which protrude from the back of its wide head.

The feature of the salamander that attracts most attention is its healing ability: the axolotl is capable of the regeneration of entire lost appendages in a period of months. Because they have the ability to regenerate lost body parts, axolotls are probably one of the most scientifically studied salamanders in the world.

Close relatives of the tiger salamander, axolotls can be quite large, reaching up to a foot (30 centimeters) in length.

Axolotls are long-lived, surviving up to 15 years on a diet of mollusks, worms, insect larvae, crustaceans, and some fish.
