One of my newest pieces, this is an exact replica of a Cave Bear skull, a mighty species of bear that became extinct around 30,000 years ago. This magnificent animal was a whopper, larger than the largest Grizzly and Kodiak bears today, and every bit as magnanimous. Quite rightly, these behemoths are considered part of the dramatically named "Megafauna" family of prehistory, and their dominance at the time was matched only by their appetite - Cave Bears would have to plough through a colossal amount of greenery to keep their spirit alive. Scientists now believe it was their dependence on a vegetarian diet that led to their ultimate demise - there's a lot to be said for the occasional bacon sandwich.

The skull I used for reference was kindly loaned to me by a fossil collector in British Columbia's interior, where this animal once made its home. Every detail is replicated here, from the ridges on its molar teeth to the bone structures at the base of the skull where it once attached to the spinal cord. It hangs perfectly from a carefully considered hole carved into the top of the skull, and it does so with dramatic effect. A true Lost Apostle original.

The Cave Bear skull measures 1 1/4" from the back of the skull to the tip of its jaw, and just over 3/4" across its huge eye orbits. Completely hand carved, the skull is cast in the finest jewelers' white bronze, hand polished and then thickly plated in silver. I then age the skull to give it a great antique look and feel, which also brings out all the details on this great piece.

I've hung this skull on a 24" gunmetal curb chain which compliments it perfectly.

In Native American mythology, the Bear represents the power of introspection - the search for the sweetness of truth. In hibernation, so lies inner-vison - the death of the illusion of physical reality and the awareness of the expansiveness of eternity beyond. What's more, in the Indian Hindu religion the cave itself symbolizes the cave of Brahma - which in turn is represented in human anatomy as the pineal gland in the center of the brain. The very same pineal gland that is more commonly referred to as The Third Eye.

The bear's got it going on.
