1911 Elementary School Book. Wheeler's Graded Readers: A Fifth Reader, by Gail Calmerton and William H. Wheeler, Chicago, 1911, 448 pages, with great black and white period illustrations.

This is a beautiful example of a turn-of-the-century schoolbook, with selections from classic authors George Eliot, Wordsworth, Dickens, Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Longfellow, Emerson, and Shakespeare, among many others. The preface stresses the importance of enjoying reading and reading well at a young age.

Hardbound at 7 1/2" X 6 1/4", with black embossed text and an illustration of two young students on the cover. This sturdy book is in excellent vintage collectible condition, amazing for its age and purpose. No fifth grader ever touched this book!

A brief inscription on the front loose end paper reads: "To Al 1937" No other marks, no tears or creases, pages are age-toned, binding is tight. The back pastedown end paper had something glued to it which has been removed leaving behind two small strips of paper.

A real prize for a collector!
