This fabulous old piece I picked up in Italy last spring from a broker who came to my hotel with her goods in tow. And for one whole luxurious afternoon over cappuccinos poolside, we indulged in talk of my favorite subject — jewelry, new and old. With all the things she had to offer, however, I could only get a few. This was one I purchased because it was very unusual and a bit rustic, and I recognized (or at least suspected) it as artisan-made. She thought it may be Austro-Hungarian and had purchased it from a jewelry shop in Stockholm, Sweden, which is where she lived part of the year. So it's provenance stops beyond that. I did, however, take it to a Heritage Auction appraiser who looked at it.

He agreed that it was probably artisan-made, but thought it was a 1950s piece made to look older. It tests Sterling but is not marked — typical of artisan creations. He noted, though, that the chain is newer than the 50s and not sterling, although it is European. The stones are, indeed, natural lemon-colored quartz crystal, otherwise known as, Citrine; and also noted that there was a tiny chip under one of the stones.

The total length of the necklace measures 19". The linked citrine portion measures 5.5" with the center pendant having a 1" drop. Each citrine gemstone is a faceted oval and measures 10mm x 16mm. The chain is silver plated, cable style, with four plaquettes. It is finished with a simple C spring clasp which is fully functional and secure.

Thanks for looking.
