Looking for bling? Big, jangley bling? Look no further!

This is a huge Kuchi pendant with dangles that jingle and jangle as you move around. The central heart design was cut from a piece of nickel. Decorations include stamping, soldering, and glass jewels. The piece has a thin silver wash over it. Look at the photos carefully: there is one loop (bail) missing at the top and one dangle missing on the left side.

This kind of ornament is also worn in the hair, on the sides of the head, holding a shawl in place.

The Pashtun are the largest ethnic majority of Afghanistan and the Kuchi, are one of the nomadic subgroups. Their clothing tends to be bright and they like jewelry that has jingly baubles. Belly dancers love their flare and style!

Estimated age: 1970's
Dimensions:
5" wide x 5.75" long (including dangles)
Metric: 12.5 x 14.5 cm

Afghanistan has been at the heart of the crossroads for the Silk Road for centuries. Nomads and generations of ethnic groups have thrived on trade and beautiful handicraft skills. Textiles, embroidery and carpet weaving continue to represent a plethora of skills that extend on into metal work, wood work, and ceramics. Designs reflect both the beauty of nature and life of spirit in choice of colors and fluidity of the design.

Afghan Tribal Arts has been working with Afghan artists for more than 20 years. Handcarved semi-precious beads are the core focus of the business, but we also have a huge inventory of old and new textiles, carvings and metal work. Visit our shop here on Etsy to see our beautiful treasures!
