African Combs

The combs are not made for hair combing or grooming.

Laser cut combs in the following options:

1 - First Symbol - Dwennimmen
Size: 9" height x 3.5 width x 1/4 thickness inches
Adinkra (ä-diŋ-krä) symbol for strength -
Dwennimmen means ram’s horns. The symbol is created from a bird’s eye view
of the two rams butting heads. A ram will courageously fight when provoked,
but may submit to slaughter when necessary. Sometimes even a strong &
confident person has to also be humble.

2 - Second Symbol - Fawohodie
Size: 9" height x 4 width x 1/4 thickness inches

Fawohodie Freedom, Independance & Emancipation
Fawohodie comes from the expression: Fawodhodie ene obre na enam,
which means: "Independence comes with its responsibilities."

“X” often stands for the unknown.
I love this Fawohodie symbol because it reminds me of thousands of unknown
people who lost their freedom, lives and names and when they were taken from Africa.
People who lost everything to built the United States, the land of the free.
People who I proudly call my ancestors

The Nation of Islam believed that the real names of the African Americans
was taken and replaced with their slave master’s names when they were
enslaved from Africa. In protest, Malcolm X refused to use his ‘slave master’
surname "Little" until he found his real name. He replaced his surname “Little”
with the letter “X”.

3 - Third Symbol - Nkyinkym
Size: 9" height x 4.25 width x 1/4 thickness inches

Nkyinkym means 'twisted. It comes from the proverb that says 'life's journey is twisted.
The symbol represents the twists and turns of life which requires versatility and resilience.

4 - Fourth Symbol SANKOFA
Size: 9 height x 2.5 width x 1/4 thickness inches

SANKOFA translates to "look to the past to inform the future,"
which means that one should learn from their past.

5 - Fifth Symbol - DUAFE
Size: 9 height x 2.5 width x 1/4 thickness inches

DUAFE means - Beauty
The Duafe symbol depicts a wooden comb.
Duafe is a symbol of femininity, as well as love and care.
It also represents good hygiene and being well groomed.
