The “backstory”:

About the “Blend” series of mini-paintings:
I’ve toyed with the idea of using coffee and other beverages as watercolor media for a while now, but until recently, never acted on the impulse. To be honest, I worried a great deal that the idea might come across as a bit silly, or even that I was taking myself too seriously by introducing an overly complicated idea. More importantly, I didn’t by any means want to come across as gimmicky.

Ultimately, however, what we consume tell us a great deal about our selves (and others), and I didn’t want to abandon such an interesting idea. Where one person consumes coffee to wake up in the morning, the next may consume it to stave off afternoon headaches, or to recover from last night’s evening of excesses (‘hair o’ the dog’, anyone?). Some may opt for the rich complexities of certain blends over others, or even use tastes to recall or avoid past memories and events in their lives. Some people opt for tea - others beer, wine, or whiskey at any hour of the day.

Although I think these designs can stand on their own, I’ve also tried to approach the subject as something more conversational. I hope that when you view these pieces, you also look a bit deeper than the simplicity, and think about your relationship to what you consume. Do you drink alone or together with someone? Do you consume the same substances as your partner, or something different? Do you have a ritual or habit associated with what you take in to keep yourself alive? Is there meaning behind it?

Like the complexities of their tastes, these liquids have similar depth of color and tone, and come from the raw materials themselves. On the back of the painting I’ve listed the materials used, and signed it. Note: I can also create to order (as long as it’s realistic), just send me a convo. I’ll get back to you and let you know if it’s doable. You may have a brand or item that is particularly meaningful to you that I can incorporate or manipulate.
