Item details

porcelain, glaze, twig, steel cable

This hand built bird feeder has two openings for feeding. The birds eat all the way to the bottom of the feeder. They also fly though or sometimes hang out inside.

Made of porcelain and finished in a metallic bronze glaze.
The ceramic screens are hand cut.
2" x 2" x 8 1/2"
Hangs from a steel cable that will not rust or break over time.
Natural twig serves as a perch.
There is a drainage hole in the bottom.

Ready to ship.

I recommend safflower seed for use with the feeder. It attracts a variety of small birds and the squirrels are completely disinterested in safflower seed so they leave the feeder alone.

A bit about the process:

Hand building offers endless possibilities for shapes and designs and allows me to create pieces that cannot be produced using my potter’s wheel. My most commonly used hand building process is slab construction. The clay is rolled out (like a giant pie shell) on a piece of canvas. It is then cut into the desired shape and draped either into a form or around a form. As the clay dries, it retains the shape of the form. Once a piece is completely dry, it is fired for the first time. This is called a bisque firing. The second and final firing is a glaze firing.

Think of a glaze simply as a coating of glass which is fused to the surface of a clay piece during the kiln firing. It adds color, texture and strength to the piece. The glaze serves to waterproof the piece and to create an easily cleaned surface, as well as providing color and decoration. The color of a glaze after it has been fired may be significantly different from before firing. That's one of the things that makes the process so magical. You never know the final results until you open the kiln after a firing.
