This antique shawl is beautiful. There are silk pieces that have been stitched to a net backing. At the bottom there is a heavier netting that resembles a miniature fishing net. Use the zoom to see what I mean--it's difficult to describe. Some of this netting has faded to a greenish color. The silk is deteriorating and pulling away from the netting in many places and there are some places that have come unstitched too. Also on the back you can see where someone tried to preserve it by gluing some of the silk pieces to the netting--I don't know how easy or difficult it would be to remove, but it's definitely there. When you look at the shawl you can see that it is very old, but the pattern is beautiful and most of the silk is intact (though very fragile). It's not a piece to wear, but a piece for history. No return on this item--it's too fragile to send back and forth in the mail. If you collect antique lace, this piece is for you.

Update--I just heard from a fellow Etsian that this is a Victorian Mourning Shawl. She is a collector of these pieces and knows more than I do about them. Thank you Lizzy for the info on the shawl. Here's a link to her shop--she also has wonderful vintage items! http://www.etsy.com/shop/lizzylovesvintage?ref=pr_shop_more
