A HANDSOME ART DECO PERIOD FAUX TORTOISESHELL HAIR COMB WITH GREEN RHINESTONE EMBELLISHMENT

This sale is for a handsome Art Deco period faux tortoiseshell hair comb with green rhinestone trim.

CONDITION: 6 missing stones otherwise good vintage condition.

SIZE: 5½ ins h x 4½ ins w (14 x 11 cms)

DATE: 1910s to 1920s

DESCRIPTION:

This lovely comb is made from tortoiseshell tinted celluloid which simulates the genuine material. By this period genuine materials like amber and tortoiseshell had become very expensive. Therefore most of the hair ornaments which appear to be made of such materials are, in fact, made from synthetics.

Art Deco ornaments are generally recognised by the geometric and formalised elements of the style. In this case the design of the heading resembles a partly opened fan, with spoke like lines radiating from the base of the heading. The fan shape is emphasized by dark blue and green rhinestones.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The style of comb is generally know as a Spanish comb from its resemblance to the beautiful ornaments which ladies of that country wear with their native dress. It is made in celluloid which is an early form of plastic now considered very collectible. Celluloid was invented in the mid 19th century but is generally associated with the Art Deco period of the early 20th century.

Combs like this were worn in a characteristic manner, being placed such a way that the tall heading stood up proud. This enabled them to be viewed from all angles and for the details to be seen effectively outlined against the light.

This manner of wearing the decorative comb is shown in the accompanying photograph on the mannequin and in picture 5. This is taken from a contemporary fashion engraving dated 1923 from a magazine called The Queen.
