This vase is both decorative and functional. The porcelain slip decoration is applied with brushes and squeeze bottles while the piece is still damp and at firing, only the decoration is covered with a glossy glaze so the unglazed area keeps its natural stoneware surface.

This motif is called "shochikubai" ..... a grouping of plum, bamboo and evergreen. It is often used in the Japanese culture in decorations for the New Year. It has also come to symbolize new beginnings and I often give gifts with this motif as wedding presents.

This piece is 10" X 5 1/2" and I will include a simple wood base for display.
