Celebrate Advent by counting down to Christmas day with this set of 25 wooden Jesse Tree Christmas Ornaments. Each ornament has correlating Old and New Testament scripture references in an included daily scripture guide. The set comes in a burlap drawstring pouch and includes natural twine for attaching as hangers. (The guides are now professionally printed and look slightly different from the pictures, but the words remain the same.)

How are the Jesse Tree ornaments from Inspired Traditions different from all the others?

I am passionate about teaching my children the Bible. My husband and I read to our children from the Bible every night, but I want them to discover that it is more than a compilation of stories. My deepest desire for my kids is that they know Jesus as their personal savior and that as they follow Him, their lives would bring glory to God. We use the Jesse Tree tradition as a tool to show our children the connections in God's word. Growing up, I understood the Bible as individual stories, but we use the Jesse Tree to teach our children how God has written his plan for salvation from the very beginning in Genesis.

Each symbol in this Jesse Tree set was thoughtfully and prayerfully chosen. Some of the Old Testament symbols are traditional and were chosen because a person in the story is in the lineage of Christ. An example is the stump ornament. The Jesse Tree tradition is so named because it originally began as a family tree for Jesus. Jesse was one of Jesus' great grandfathers (the father of David) and Isaiah 11:1 talks about a "shoot" that will come from the stump of Jesse. We explain to our children from Matthew that Jesse is in the lineage of Jesus and from Romans that Jesus is the "shoot" Isaiah prophesied would come.

Other Old Testament symbols were chosen because Jesus himself referred to some part of the story. One example is the ladder. Not only is Jacob in Jesus' lineage, but Jesus referred to Jacob's dream (Genesis 28:12) when he described how he is the connection between Heaven and Earth in John 1:51. Another example is the whale ornament. We do not just read a random story about Jonah because the big fish is a cute symbol and it's a "classic" Bible story. We also read to our children from Matthew 12:38-41 where Jesus used the story of Jonah to describe how long he would be in the tomb.

The New Testament symbols chosen have the prophecy scriptures referenced from the Old Testament. An example is the lamb which reminds us of the shepherds who sought out baby Jesus in Bethlehem shortly after he was born. Hundreds of years earlier, the prophet Micah had prophecied that a ruler would come from that little town. For this ornament we not only read to our children the Christmas story from Luke 2, but also the fulfilled prophecy from Micah 5:2.

Each day from December 1st to Christmas Day, my children take turns placing one of these ornaments on our tree after we have read to them the story behind the symbol. In the last month of the year, they get a reminder of a few of the stories they have learned throughout the year and hear again how the Bible as a whole is connected through the grace of Jesus as we prepare to celebrate his birth.

During the advent season, we love to talk with our children about celebrating the first time Jesus came to Earth as a baby and remind them that we look forward to Christ coming again! From the story of creation to the story of the wise men following a star, each ornament from our Jesse Tree helps us tell our children the story of God's plan to bring us back to himself through Jesus. The Jesse Tree displays the story of the coming Christ, carved out through history, by the sovereign hand of God.
