With such a stellar example of 1930s design, it is no surprise to discover that the label, Jean Carol, was designed by the designer Peggy Hunt. Great information about the work of Peggy Hunt can be seen at fuzzylizzie.com: http://fashionsfinest.fuzzylizzie.com/huntalexander.html

The dress is made of unlined burgundy taffeta. The bodice is pretty bare, especially—in true 30s fashion—the back. The halter neckline loops through the top of the back straps loop. There is an under-bust seam, decorated with an ice blue velvet ribbon which has hidden snaps to hold it in place. Over the fitted skirt there is a very full and long peplum that leaves the center front of the skirt uncovered. The straight skirt itself echoes the peplum, flaring very full from the bottom of the peplum. Velvet bows circle the top of the flare, all except for the smooth front panel. There are bows almost hidden under the peplum on the sides. I feel like dancing (à la Ginger Rogers) would allow others to glimpse this great detail! Synthetic braided horsehair is hidden in the hems to enhance the fullness. There is a side covered metal zipper.

Condition: Dry cleaned, I would call the dress' condition very good. There are a few small marks on the front bodice, shown on the left side of the last square. The straps have been neatly shortened in back (right side of last square). The velvet has some discoloration in various spots, and this did not come out in cleaning (see the next to last photo for an example). There are a few very faint, negligible marks in other places. I believe the splendor of this dress ameliorates its flaws.

Size: Small, about US size 6 by my estimate. My blog on size information: http://denisebrain.blogspot.com/2011/10/womens-vintage-clothing-determining.html

Bust-Up to about 39"
Top of shoulder to waist-16"
Waist to hem-43"

Please note: I measure the dimension of the item itself, and you will need to consider what size you would want the item to be to fit well on you.
