The entire forest was humming with the kind of energy that always followed a soft rain. The world was electric, the very essence of life perfuming the air, flooding it with the scents of moist earth and sparkling ozone.
It smelled like magic...because it was.
The world had briefly paused as the rains pounded the tree tops, falling in glistening grey curtains through the branches, soaking the ground. The creatures that could take cover had done so. Finding shelter wherever they could. The rabbits to their burrows, the birds under branches and the strangely alive fungi pulled themselves from the ground and crowded closer to the giant trees that surrounded them.
Skip was one of the ones who had scooted under the natural arch of an oak tree's roots, avoiding most of the icy rains but from his vantage point able to watch his world be rinsed clean, refreshed.
His dark eyes, always filled with curiosity, watched with wonder at the power of such a downpour. It was as if a watery hand swept across the woody landscape, brightening all the colours. Rinsing away the dust and scattering the leaves, saturating the green moss so that it glowed like a rich carpet of pure emerald. The plants glistened, leaves decorated with brilliant jewel drops of rain, the woods thirstily soaked up the water and glowed with renewed life.
Then it stopped, the rains ceasing their rushing fall, leaving a long hush of silence filled only with the soft, sporadic music of the final drops splashing from the branches.
Skip poked his red cap out from under the sheltering tree root and peered up at the bits of sky between the branches. The dark rain clouds had passed, the world glittered, freshly polished as a weak ray of light pushed itself through the clouds.
Skip hollered, joy and happiness erupting in a spontaneous shout of celebration. He wasn't alone, the woods sprang to life, the silence chased away by the chaotic music of a thousand voices chiming together, expressing their happiness, animal and fungi alike.
Quiet time was over, Skip felt his little shroom legs, the magical gift of freedom that had been given to his kind long ago, tingling with the urge to move.
So he did move.
Skip sprang from his hiding spot into the clean air, feet together, hopping as fast as he could, enjoying the teasing kiss of breezes on his face. He could have ran, danced, walked or leapt across the ground but his joy bubbled out in the fanciful hopping urge that had come upon him.
Around him other fungi flashed him grins, pure happiness on their faces, sparkling in their eyes. Each caught up in the movement that swept through them, until the entire forest floor was a chaotic but sweetly simple dance of the mushrooms, celebrating the pleasure of a rain.
