~Victorian English Christening Gown ~

This gown dates from the turn of the last century from about c.1890 to around 1910, and is in a classic Victorian style. This gown follows a traditional pattern with a center panel embellished with embroidery and tucks, in this case on the bias. The center panel becomes a cascade of 5 tiers of ruffles at the lower part of the skirt and there are as well the traditional 'robings' (long ruffles) that flow over the shoulders and down to the hem making this a dramatic, showy ...and very feminine gown.

This gown is made of a fine quality cotton batiste and has been beautifully sewn by machine with the tiniest possible stitching. The embroidery as well is of fine machine made quality. This compares with another gown in our shop which was entirely handmade...but you can see that this gown too is lovely and elegant and would be a fine gown for any baby's Christening

This fine gown measures 19 inches around at the raised waist and 7 1/2 inches across at the shoulders. It measures 40 inches from the shoulder to the hem so that it will have a lovely sweeping drape when baby is carried to the altar. Because we cannot assign sizes to these vintage items, please check your measurements carefully. We can say that we believe this gown would likely fit a baby of about 3 months to 9 months.

Finally this gown is in excellent vintage condition, clean and white. This gown has a tiny repair on the back bodice. . You will find perhaps just a few tiny breaks in the embroidery here and there, but this gown has no stains or other signs of wear. Any minor imperfections you may find on close inspection could be easily be dealt with by a good seamstress. This gown closes at the back with traditional tapes which would require replacing...again easily done by a good seamstress. . The few imperfections in the gown are minor and are to be expected in a vintage Christening gown of this age.

This lovely French Christening gown will come to you freshly hand laundered using fine French hypoallergenic soap and will be ironed, fresh, clean, white and ready to use.

All in all this gown is just a delightful creation and will be treasured as a family heirloom.
