This beautifully shaped gourd is decorated to portray the freshness of a fall day and the incredible colors all around us in the Midwest. Maple leaves of all colors, mixed with oak leaves and even acorns form this gourd. The warm fall colors match the natural décor tones in homes year-round.

Each gourd is a product of the earth, so each is unique. It is those unique characteristics that inspire me to create a musical instrument, a piece of art, or a functional item.

I have used many techniques to create this functional art. Acrylic paints were used on the base of the bowl as well as the inside and cut edges. I have woodburned the edges and acorns. I used a non-fading gourd ink to make the sweet blends of color on each leaf and the leaf veins have been carved.

As you can see from the photos, the natural mottling of the gourd shows through the inks adding to the realistic look of the leaves.

This bowl is certainly a conversation piece.

Each of these gourds is grown from seed and nourished by the sun and earth. They must be dried for about one year before they are ready for their “make-over”. After much thought and consideration on size, shape, etc., I scrub the outside of the gourd, cut it open and remove the seed stuffing’s inside. Many of the gourds have markings or mottling, some an occasional scar from their early life on the ground. I believe those characteristics are some of the most beautiful parts of a gourd and most of my finished products still show those characteristics

Depending on the decided project, I may use acrylic paint or hand blended gourd inks. I often use pyrography (woodburning) to make my designs. I also will carve details and use a mini saw to cut out parts of the gourd. All finished projects have my initials and a protective coating of hand rubbed wax or polyurethane.

It is with great passion and joy that I make these items. I hope you will experience that, too.
