This is a Calash which was designed to protect women's large 18th century hairstyles from the elements (see photo 3). It was collapsible and made of silk. this Calash was an OMG moment when mom picked it up. It is a bottle green silk taffeta with cane support. The silk is starting to deteriorate, but it is the oldest piece we own. For the age of the hat, it is in really really great condition. It is stored flat in a protective box and was opened for this photo and put back. I hope someone will love it as much as we have.
