The legend goes something like this: In the 1500’s in Old Mexico, a young girl wished to honor the Christ child but was too poor to bring a gift to the celebration of His birth. She was inspired by an angel to gather roadside plants for a bouquet; she did so, and the weeds miraculously sprouted crimson blossoms in response to her faith and obedience.

We don’t usually think of poinsettia as roadside weeds, but the showy cultivated potted plants with which we love to decorate have indeed descended from a shrub that can reach 16’ in height in the wilds of Mexico. The Aztecs used it for red dye and medicine. Named for the first U.S. minister to Mexico, it is also called “Noche Buena” (Christmas Eve) and “Crown of the Andes”.

This hand-painted image on 20” square indoor-outdoor pillow lends a festive touch but never requires watering or repotting. And for all of us brown thumbs, it banishes the guilt (oh, the guilt!) that accompanies the inevitable demise of our holiday potted plants. The pillow is stuffed with a removable fiberfill insert which may be machine-washed; cover may be spot cleaned, hosed off, or gently washed cool and air dried.

Did you know that the things that we view as petals are actually leaves, and that the real flowers are those knobby yellow deelybobbers in the center? The bracts can be cream, white, green, pink, orange, red or marbled. Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not toxic to people, but might cause some rather unpleasant gastic reactions. There are over a hundred varieties of cultivated poinsettia, but in this shop you will find two: One in classic reds, and the other in retro pinks.

These design looks great with other classic Christmas motifs from this shop (see last photo). Designed, painted, sewn, stuffed like a Christmas turkey, signed and copyrighted on a small island in Washington State. Thank you for looking, and Happy Holidays!
