If you're a fan of works like Madame Bovary, you'll probably enjoy this book. Also, the cover is absolutely charming and would look marvelous by your bedside! It's in very good vintage condition. Very much still perfectly intact, very light creases on the binding, only a few of the pages have been folded at the corners and there is slight discoloration which should be expected from the age of the piece.

published: 1960, Anchor Books Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York

condition: Very good

'As the richest woman in France and a princess whose father would have become king but for the late and unexpected birth of Louis XIII's heir, Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans, the Grand Mademoiselle, seemed destined for an early and advantageous marriage. Yet one after another the state matches rumored for her failed to materialize. Meanwhile her life was complicated by her fanatical devotion to her worthless father who not only tried to mulct her of her fortune but repeatedly took part in doomed conspiracies against his brother, the king, into which she was drawn. Exiled at twenty-five for ordering the guns of the Bastille to fire on the king's troops, she began to write her memoirs. Later she returned to the court and to new intrigues. Finally, when she was nearly forty, she met the great love of her life.'

' "Out of the amorphous mass [of her memoirs], Francis Steegmuller, with a skill which has made his Flaubert and Madame Bovary a modern classic, has extracted a clear, swift-moving narrative." ' —ALBERT GUÉRARD in the New York Times
