This is my interpretation of the Lafayette Orange Peel Block. The block originally appeared during the 1850's, and thru 1875. Then again during the 1930's thru 1949. According to the Encyclopedia of Quilt patterns, this block is also called Orange Peel, Robbing Peter to Pay Paul, The Reel, and Orange Slices.

I've used a large floral fabric print for the elliptical shapes, two different white fabrics for the backgrounds, a bold and colorful abstract fabric for the borders, and a complementary toned yellow textured fabric on the back. The quilt's scalloped edge is finished with a double fold bias binding that was made from a purple floral fabric.

The large floral print fabric is arranged so that the darker blues and purples of the print are on one side of the diagonal quilt design, and the lighter greens and tans are on the opposite side.

One of the background fabrics is a white on white floral print, and the other is a white with a very pale grey green texture. This subtle difference in the two white background fabrics can be seen in the full sized photo. The background is changing in white fabric on the diagonal line, but it's a very soft, almost indistinct change.

I have custom longarm quilted this quilt with ditching using invisible thread, cross hatching using a King Tut cotton purple, blue, green variegated thread, floral feathers on the ellipses, using a purple metallic thread, and scalloped feathers on the borders using the same King Tut cotton purple, blue, green variegated thread that I used on the cross hatching. I used invisible thread in my bobbin, resulting in a stunning finish on the quilt back; the back of this quilt has a beautiful stand alone texture and pattern as shown in the photo.

This quilt measures 75 inches by 75 inches. All of the fabric and the batting is cotton, so this quilt is washable in cold water by hand or machine on the gentle cycle. A hanging sleeve has been attached to the back, so that you may hang it, as this One of A Kind Quilt looks as great on the wall as it does over bed.

Whether you are a collector, or If you are just looking for that unique gift, this modern reproduction quilt is full of artistry and color. Over 200 hours went into the design, construction and quilting of this Lafayette Orange Peel reproduction.
