Hallmarked 8, fouled Anchor symbol(Goldsmith Stern Co) and sterling. Hallmark dates this thimble from 1890-1933. Engraved Mo or Ma. Great top and bottom.
Note on the "fouled" anchor hallmark:
The mark - known as the "fouled anchor" - on the thimble above is that of Stern Brothers of Philadelphia. The anchor mark dates the thimble to 1890 - 1908. The company used two other marks (SBC and GSC) pictured below during its history (1890-1933). It became Goldsmith, Stern & Co in 1913 until it folded in 1933.

My opinion is that we should use these wonderful sterling thimbles for sewing and quilting. I have included how to determine your thimble size below.
Thimbles are usually worn on the middle finger or thumb.
All thimbles measure 5/8 inch tall, regardless of size; and they taper in a bit at the top. Since most thumbs are not round, you can squeeze your thimble a bit to make it slightly oval, rather than being perfectly round, for a better fit. Here is the circumference the thimbles measure at the base, their widest point:

•Size 7 -- 2 inch
•Size 8 -- 2-1/16 inch
•Size 9 -- 2-1/8 inch
•Size 10 -- 2-3/16 inch
•Size 11 -- 2-1/4 inch
•Size 12 -- 2-5/16 inch
•Size 13 -- 2-3/8 inch
Take a flexible (dressmakers) measuring tape and wrap it around your thumb between the base of the thumbnail and the first knuckle. Fit it snuggly and take that measurement. This will give you a thimble that fits comfortably.
