"The Life of the Master" 1901 1st Edition.

by Rev. John Watson whose more common pen name was Ian Maclaren (1850 – 1907) was a Scottish author and theologian. In 1874 he became a minister of the Free Church of Scotland from which he retired in 1905. Maclaren's first stories of rural Scottish life achieved extraordinary popularity and were succeeded by other successful books. Under his own name Watson published several volumes books and this is one of them.

It is thought that Maclaren was the original source of the quote “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle,” now widely misattributed to Plato or Philo of Alexandria. (Information from Wiki)
