We believe that this white ironstone or china compote is either unmarked European or American, and is from the late-19th or early 20th Century. It could be either factory-decorated or the product of a "Ladies' China-Painting Class" from that era. It is in extremely good condition with no dings, chips, cracks, scrapes, stains, impurities under the glaze, or wear to the hand-painted grape decoration or the pink trim. There is wear to the gold line trim on the pedestal, and I assume that there was once gold trim on the rim of the bowl which has now disappeared. This is common and acceptable as the gold just isn't very durable. It looks as if this piece has spent generations sleeping away in the back of a china cabinet! The pedestal is made of a dense, heavy ironstone, but the bowl appears to be of a lighter, transluscent porcelain. It has a "ring" when struck. It is 4" high to the rim of the bowl, 2.5" high to the base of the bowl, 9" across the bowl, and 4.5" across the base. A very simple and elegant example of hospitality from a past era.
