If you collect vintage toys, than this set is a must see! I found these pins in a fun little anitques shop on Martha's Vineyard last summer. This complete set of painted wooden soldiers and three balls is in it's origional box. The box itself has some damage but the graphics are colorful and quaint and it still displays nicely.
There are ten wooden soldier pins in all, each measuring approximately 6.5 inches tall. There are two of each color: Red coat /blue cap, colonial blue coat/red cap, sage green coat/red cap, light gold coat/blue cap and a mellow orange coat/ sage cap. Four pins have blue arms, six have red. Over 99% of the origional paint is intact and there are no repairs or touch ups. There is very minimal scuffing, they are bowling pins after all!! The three wooden balls are painted red, blue and yellow. These have more scuffing and some paint chips and nicks. The photos illustrate the imperfections well and personally I think it adds to it's vintage charm and appeal!!
Unfortunately the box does have some water mark damage, but is fairly intact. The graphics are sweet and the box still cute.. Text reads" Army Cadet Ten-Pin Set", "non-injurious colors", Stahlwood Toy MFG. Co. USA." "New York, USA" " Made in USA No. 700" "Joy A Better Made Toy" Additionally the upper right corner has pulled apart and there is tape on the inside. Also someone has written "8111" on the box front in pencil. Stahl manufactored lots of plastic baby toys during the 50's and 60's, however I had difficulty dating this specific item. I have found similar wooden ten pin sets on vintage toy sites, manufactured by Stahl and dated 1949.
This little grouping of soldiers could be nicely tied in with a vintage style Christmas display. They would make a fun and cheerful addition to your collection! Thanks for looking!!
