ABOUT THE ITEM

This beautiful clock features a wood case, brass accoutrements, wood engraving, 1.25" pillars on either side of the clock face, and the original Seth Thomas-marked movement. As far as we can tell, the clock is completely original. Externally, the clock is in excellent condition considering its age. This clock is currently not in working condition. We visited a clocksmith who indicated a pendulum needs to be added and that there are two bearings that need to be replaced. Aside from these parts, the clocksmith indicated that everything appears to be intact and in working order but that the movement could use a good cleaning. Because we think the clock is a beautiful decorative piece either way, we decided to let the buyer determine whether to have this work done.

Seth Thomas manufactured these adamantine mantel clocks in many different styles between 1880 and 1931. While this particular clock shows a patent date of September 7, 1880, we know the clock dates to sometime after 1900 because the regulating square is below the center of the dial, indicating a Model 89 movement that Seth Thomas started using circa 1900.

Adamantine is a celluloid veneer glued to the wood case. Adamantine veneer was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx and marble.

This clock measures 17.25" x 10.25" tall x 7.25" deep. The clock face is approximately 5.75" in diameter.
