Nuristan, "Land of Light", is a province in the mountainous region of NorthEastern Afghanistan. Kohistan is on the other side, in Pakistan. Both have their roots in ancestor worship and animism, although the Nuristanis have largely converted to Islam.

This baby's hat is traditional to the dress in the region: tiny cross stitch designs accented with white beads against black cotton fabric. Nuristan is thought to have been crossed by Alexander the Great. As there are many blondes in the area, they are considered to be his direct descendents. It is interesting to me that the Kuchi, who live in more desert areas, have bright, eye-catching clothing, while the mountain people, also highly decorated, go for a more subdued, earthy palette. Perhaps you want to be seen in the desert, concealed in the forest? At any rate, this gorgeous hat, baby size, is a beautiful piece! The stitches are tiny and even. It's in excellent shape, definitely a collector's item!

The hat is almost like a baby blanket, with a long drape that would wrap a baby or small child. The lining is a plain brownish cotton with large, bold stitches, holding down the embroidered top design.

Dimensions, measured flat across:
8.25" at brow (22 cm)
24.5" long, from tip to bottom of the front (63 cm)
31" long, from tip to bottom of the back (79 cm)
