This oil lamp has been hand crafted from a Manzanita Burl. Manzanita wood (Arctostaphylos manzanita) grows from Southern California up to Washington State. It is a shrub growing up to 20 feet with twisting branches. The wood is very hard, dense and colorful with deep shades of red and brown. Since the burls grow underground the wood often has interesting voids where stones and dirt were embedded. The burl for this oil lamp came from an area around Mt. Lassen in Northern California. Though Manzanita is a commonly found throughout the west coast, burls are only found between 1500 – 2500 feet elevation.

This burl is finished with Deft Danish Oil which is a penetrating tung oil urethane. Its translucent formula brings out the natural beauty of wood, and does not mask the wood grain. There are 8 to 10 hand-rubbed coats of finish on this piece, these coats will provide more protection and enhance the colors of Manzanita. Manzanita Burls are unique and beautiful with a lot of character.
