Ocean Jasper pendant Cabochon (1001-C)
This Cabochon measures 37x25mm; weighs 8.4 grams. It has a lustrous glossy finish.
Ocean Jasper is from Madagascar and there is no other like it.
This beautiful cabochon is from my collection; it has dark unusual forms of burgundy colors over turquoise across the center with a touch of snowy white and a darker green cap.
Ocean Jasper is so varied in colors and orbicular formations are difficult to describe. Some orbs have a golden center like most flowers, while surrounded by a completely different color forming a lovely mixed bouquet on a green and sometimes transparent crystal background.
The gemstone variety is silicified rhyolite flow from off the northwest coast of Madagascar. It can only be seen and collected at low tide. The area has no road, so the material must be transported to civilization by boat.
Ocean Jasper was first written about in 1922 and than the location was actually lost for almost 80 years. It was named for its location as well as its resemblance to the foam of the ocean as it recedes back into the ocean, with its wavy patterns of green-gray, white, cream, beige, brown, pink and maroon formations come together in a most unusual amazing way. Each cabochon has its own distinctive mineral formation which makes it a one-of-a-kind.
