Always artistic, Sylvia Natterer studied art pedagogy and taught in Switzerland. She moved with her husband to Munich and made marionettes with an unconventional puppet theatre. A doll she made for her daughter Fanny began a passion which helped her through the health sorrows of her handicapped child. After her talent was recognized at the Frankfurt Spring Fair, she designed for many top companies in the doll industry. At Nurnberg Toy Fair, she sells handmade art dolls of diverse materials to collectors, museums, and galleries worldwide. Sylvia lives and works in her old schoolhouse in Tyrol, Austria. With her five children grown, she has time to make what she likes best.

All of the dolls listed in the NIADA Artists Collective have been generously donated to The NIADA Foundation by the artists and patrons of NIADA to raise money to cover printing and production costs of the "NIADA Art Dolls: Rich Traditions, New Ideas" book which showcases the history of the organization and work of 160 artists who have been awarded membership since the group’s founding in 1963. The book was published in 2009 by The NIADA Foundation and The Susan Quinlan Doll & Teddy Bear Museum & Library.

Each artist member creates their individual style and type of art doll. Whether produced as a one-of-a-kind piece or part of an edition, the ideal work reflects excellence; all work must be consistently well conceived, expertly executed without technical faults, and should show an individual identity of design. Work is promoted and marketed by individual artists, and by NIADA in venues such as its annual Show and Sale, conferences, and publications.

The NIADA Foundation teaches and mentors emerging doll artists. All proceeds from the sale of these dolls will go to the NIADA Foundation Scholarship Fund.
