This Very Vintage Christmas Ornament was hand built and formed from four thin ribbons of speckled brownstone clay. The ornament was then glazed with a thin coating of alligator raku glaze and fired in the American style of a raku firing process. The finished ornament is hung by a very basic wire wrapping of 18g gunmetal wire.

Ornament size is approximately 3.5"h x 2.75"w,
Ornament with wire work: 4.75"h

What is American Raku?

Long used for tea ceremony ware in Japan, raku traditionally involves firing a pot in a kiln at lower temperatures, only to remove it and plunge it in water while still red-hot. American raku involves "smoking" the piece instead, by plunging it into combustible materials such as sawdust or newspapers instead of water. This method was discovered in 1960 by the Father of American Raku, Paul Soldner who, while practicing the Japanese method, accidentally dropped his bowl in a bed of leaves. After sparking a fire around the pot and burning the leaves surrounding it, the combination of smoky results and an iridescent sheen were shown.
