The "Chino" martingale leather dog collar is a limited slip dog collar perfect for walks and training. We add deertan leather lacing for durability and a signature rustic Pup Planet look. Lacing takes quite a bit of patience, but we love the look! Handmade here in San Diego with high-quality cowhide. Please specify your width, leather and lacing color choices when ordering (e.g. "1 inch black collar with tan lacing").

Please note: We do not make choke collars. Our version of the martingale collar is normally intended for walks and/or training only, and differs from the traditional martingale. Dogs should not wear this style of collar 24/7, and should always be supervised when the collar is on. This design is known as a "half-check" or "half-choke" because it is not made to tighten beyond the dog's actual neck size. The ends of the leather strap will come close to touching when the collar is pulled tight, but it will not tighten more than that. We learned how to size and create this style of martingale collar in Japan; taught by a professional dog sport competitor and trainer who has been doing "half-choke" collars in this fashion for over 10 years. They've been teaching owners how to train & control their dogs with this exact design for over a decade. Although the traditional martingale design is a choke collar, we make half-check collars because we do not believe in harming the dogs. When sized correctly, our martingales do not allow a dog to work free when the lead is pulled. However, the chain control loop assembly adds extra length to the overall size of the collar when loose, so this version of "half-choke" martingale training collar is not designed for all-day, everyday use.
For collar sizes between 8 and 15 inches we generally use a small chain loop assembly, which adds approximately 4 inches to the size of the collar when loose. Collars between 15 inches and 20 inches get the medium size chain loop, which adds 5 inches to the collar size when loose. And big collars from about 20 inches or larger, will generally get the large chain, adding close to 6 inches to the overall size when loose. In some cases this type of "half-check" or "half-choke" collar may slip off when not attached to a lead, depending on the dog's breed, head size, and chain size used in constructing the collar. When ordering, please provide accurate head and neck measurements (see below for tips). If you are concerned about the collar being too big when loose, we may be able to use a smaller chain control loop, or take a small amount off the size of the leather portion of the collar so it's not quite as big when loose. But please note that we will not knowingly make a choke collar.

Accurate sizing is important for all dog collars, but especially for our martingales because they are not adjustable. Martingales are designed to slip over the head but not allow a dog to back out of the collar when pulling. It's best to provide your dog's breed & three different measurements if you're not sure about the correct size to purchase. First, measure the widest part of your dog's head. Next, measure directly behind the ears, and finally around the middle of the neck. Avoid measuring the base of the neck near the shoulders, adding extra size for long hair, or measuring loosely with "2-fingers under the collar". The measurements should be snug to reflect your dog's actual sizing. As an example, if the widest part of the head is 14.5" (36.8 cm), neck is 13.5" (34.3 cm) and behind ears is 13" (33 cm), we suggest a 13" (33 cm) martingale collar. You could size down to 12.75" if your dog regularly tries to work his way off your collars but we can’t get much smaller than that. If you're not sure, please do not hesitate to ask! Note: Martingale dog collars are a wonderful dog training tool & also work very well when you go out for walks. However, they are loose when not being pulled. Canine companion(s) should be supervised when wearing this type of collar; we suggest removing martingale collars when not in use.

The collar is 1" wide but can be ordered with 1.25 or 1.5 inch widths for bigger dogs or sighthound breeds. When ordering, please provide accurate head and neck measurements. Pricing is based upon size ranges shown below. As an example, if you need a 13” martingale, you would order from the “S” size range, and include “13 inches” in the notes during checkout.

XS: between 8 and 10 inches
S: from 10 to 14 inches
M: from 14 to 17 inches
L: from 17 to 20 inches
XL: from 20 to 23 inches
