This Celtic Dragon Mug is an original work of art by Chischilly Pottery, and was inspired by a unique drinking vessel from the history of ancient Greece known as the Rhyton. The original was designed and hand carved by Jane Chischilly, then cast and reproduced in studio by the mother/son (Jane/Jason) team that is Chischilly Pottery. Originally a "Bottom's Up Cup", the rhyton was meant to be set on the rim when empty... as a socially responsible potter, I have added a tripod (on handle and chin) to allow the cup to be set down after about one third of your drink is finished... for temperance sake.

Length: 9 inches (Rim of cup to nose)
Height: 6 1/2 inches (Sitting Up on handle)
Width: 3 1/2 inches
Capacity: 20 ounces (held upright)
16. ounces (sitting )

A little bit of History:

A rhyton is a container from which fluids were intended to be drunk, or else poured in some ceremony such as libation, a ritual pouring of a drink as an offering to a god or deity. Rhytons were very common in ancient Persia, where they were called takuk (تکوک).

After a Greek victory on Persia, much silver, gold, and other luxuries, including numerous rhytons, were brought to Athens. Persian rhytons, which appear in Athens suddenly in great quantities after the war, were immediately imitated by Greek artists. From the Mediterranean, the rhyton style of mug spread across Europe and Scandinavia.
