Here's a beautiful antique engraved map of Alexandria, Egypt back in 1906.

If you ever find yourself traveling back in time and find yourself walking the streets of the city of Alexandria back in 1906, you'll be able to navigate your way around the city's ports and streets with grace and ease!

Alexandria was founded around a small pharaonic town c. 331 BC by Alexander the Great. It remained Egypt's capital for nearly a thousand years, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in AD 641, when a new capital was founded at Fustat (Fustat was later absorbed into Cairo). Alexandria was known because of its Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; its library (the largest library in the ancient world); and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. Ongoing maritime archaeology in the harbor of Alexandria, which began in 1994, is revealing details of Alexandria both before the arrival of Alexander, when a city named Rhacotis existed there during the Ptolemaic dynasty.
From the late 19th century, Alexandria became a major center of the international shipping industry and it's one of the most important trading centers in the world both because it profited from the easy overland connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea and the lucrative trade in Egyptian cotton.

This original map from 1906 is illustrated in yummy soft pastel colors; all done in those gorgeous shades of Carnation Pinks and Aquas that early mapmakers loved so much, with lettering done in German in a beautiful Gutenburg calligraphy text. There's a key to the city on the right side outlining the city's many points of interest.

The lovely satin-finished antique map measures 6.25" x 9.25" overall and it's blank on the reverse side. '1906 Map Of Alexandria Egypt' is printed on heavy paper stock and is in wonderful antique condition; the paper is smooth, clean and condition, without tanning, wrinkles, foxing or flaw.... a real vintage gem.

Matted, framed and displayed as a gallery grouping, these wonderful old Edwardian Era maps are simply spectacular. (Please note that the framed examples in the last photo are to show how this might look when it's framed. Your map will come unframed.)
