This weathered antique rosary embellished with a patina'ed brass divider has a stark, regal presence. From it hangs a rudraksha seed or "Shiva's tears" used in meditation, and more carved antique bogwood. A vintage, a Czech glass tear and a garnet red crystal blood-drop hang below. Weighting the piece is a very old African stone bead. This bead was in a lot from a trader who had traveled extensively throughout Western Africa. The bead resembles the agate stone beads excavated in Mali that are possibly ancient. I have only cleaned this gently, as the I feel the marks of its travel and age are part if its beauty. It resembles a tiny, ancient stone wheel.

This antique rosary has the length and weight of a traditional nun's rosary. The beads resemble horn or are perhaps bogwood or similar jet subsitute. Sometimes the materials I use keep their own secrets and are full of mystery.

While making this rosary, I thought about the Donatello's sculpture of Mary Magdalen-- ravaged by faith, love and time. She resembles St. Mary of Egypt-- covered in her own hair and looking quite wild. It tried to capture such untamed devotion in this piece.

The beaded chain of the neckace is over 36" long and the center divider is 4" long from the top of the connector to the stone bead "wheel". This necklace slips easily over the head and does not have a clasp.

I have made these little momento mori earrings to match this necklace: http://www.etsy.com/listing/87116347/momento-mori-gothic-skull-earrings-in

Your necklace will come wrapped up in a little gift bag. (A lovely customer has told me she reuses the gift bags, filling them with lavender and herbs and using them as drawer sachets to keep the moths away!)

All handmades are created one at a time in my little Victorian home in a cobblestone street in the shadow of the medieval walls of the city of York.
