The beautiful night-flying Luna (means "moon") moth lives mainly in the eastern half of the United States. It is translucent, and I think of it as being something like part ghost and part fairy........ it has similar moth cousins on most of the world's continents. The main color is a subtle pale green, with edges touched by copper and violet.

My unique self developed process involves drawing the shape on the leather, burning in details with a wood burner, and soaking the vegetable-tanned leather in water. Next, I manually shape the piece with my fingers, allow it to dry and then the fun begins!

Using beautiful colors I finish with something magical. They are called interference colors... Like real butterfly scales, they have no color of their own until the light strikes them at the right angle -they appear and then... disappear! Magic!

I have made the Luna moth brooch very close to its spectacular size in nature-just under 5inches wide and 4inches tall from antennae tips to the bottom of its ribbonlike tails .Its furry body is made of fleece-like fabric and embellished with inks.

With the purchase, I'll include your choice of a metal brooch converter( to use with your own neckring, ribbon, etc.) or an adjustable braided nylon neckpiece so that the Luna can also star as the center of neckpiece.
