Beautiful compass measures 4 1/8 inches with the brass bowl measuring 3 1/2 inches deep. Compass rose marked Georg Hechelmann Nachf. Vorsetven 15 Hamburg does show signs of age.
Like almost all compasses prior to the 20th century it is laid out in 32 points of 11 1/4 degrees with the 8 cardinal points labeled, note that east is marked with an O. The card has a fleur di lis on the north point, hard to see as the card has somewhat deteriorated. Jeweled center bearing has verdigris. Inside the bowl some of the paint finish has flaked off. The outside of the bowl has a wonderful, dark, rich patina. One of the pinions is bent downward with an indentation inside the bowl. There are 2 black vertical lubber lines 90 degrees apart, not sure why there would be two. Few minor scratches on the crystal.
Great antique piece to display as is or to have restored. It must be quite rare or scarce, there seems to be virtually no information online about this maker or documented examples to help determine the year.
Reminds me of the old seafaring novels we all love, Moby Dick, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Treasure Island and other tales of pirates and shipwrecks. Great steampunk collectible.
Will be shipped very well packed and insured.
