Older Tibetan or Nepalese prayer box known as a ghau. Containers like this are used to carry magic charms & medicinal herbs as well as being a portable shrine for self protection when traveling. Tibetan Buddhists often wear ghaus which carry sacred verse stored inside as powerful divine objects. This ghau is most likely 40 to 60 years old. The repoussed front piece appears to be low grade silver and is decorated with a coral bead for protection. The sides and back are constructed of a silver colored alloy and or copper. The back may be a replacement as it is rather primitive but fits well. 2 3/8" tall by 2 5/8" wide by just shy of 3/8" thick. Weighs 23.1 grams. Shows signs of wear indicative of age and cherished use.
