Autumn Joy Stonecrop Succulent Sedum ('Herbstfreude') is a versatile cottage garden favorite for the front of borders and edging. This taller, shrub-like perennial sedum provides four-season interest, beginning with tiny succulent clusters in early spring that grow throughout summer to 24" tall flowers.

Starting green, then turning pink, and finally red to rust brown in fall, the flat-topped flower bunches can be left standing throughout winter for visual interest and food for birds. Cut back in spring to reveal new green growth!

Attractive to bees and butterflies, popular Autumn Joy Sedum is perfect for pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, drought gardens (xeriscaping), and rock gardens. Pairs well with *Blue Plumbago Leadwort, asters, mums, blue fescue grass, *dianthus, hostas, and *purple coneflower. Can be deadheaded to encourage new flowers.

Zone: 3-8

Height: Flowers reach about 24" tall.

Shape: Tall Mounded

Light: Prefers full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Drought tolerant and deer-resistant.

Seed Notes: Sow in spring after last frost, or start indoors with a grow light/sunny window. Medium-fast spread in a mounding habit. Plant 2-5' apart. Clay-soil and drought-tolerant. Divide every few years. A very versatile plant, mine live with Gold Mop False Cypress, *Blue Plumbago Leadwort groundcover, Snow in Summer, and Fire Chief Arborvitae.

Packs of 5 seedheads, each yielding a dozen seeds.

I planted the seeds properly under ideal conditions and not a single seed germinated. I am a gardener for many years successfully growing Sedums of many varieties. Disappointing indeed.

Purchased Stella d oros which arrived correct and in proper shape. Ordered hibiscus and the seed pods that I got were infertile however after discussing with her what happened she refunded by purchase for the hibiscus!

They did not germinate. I filled a pot with potting soil and spread the seeds over it; watered them regularly for over two weeks. Nothing came out of them.

Response from Girl Gone Herbal

Hi Lambert! I certainly understand your disappointment, however I wanted to remind you about the “seed notes” section of my listing that gives detailed information on how to germinate these. “Seed Notes: Sow in spring after last frost, or start indoors with a grow light/sunny window and heated seed mat at 65-70 degrees F. **Liriope seeds should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours before sowing! Germination takes 30 days.”
