***Ammolite is a rare and valuable opal-like organic gemstone found primarily along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada. It is arguably the rarest gemstone on earth, formed from a species which has been extinct for 70 million years.

It is made of the fossilized shells of ammonites, which in turn are composed primarily of aragonite, the same mineral that makes up nacreous pearls. An iridescent opal-like play of color is shown in fine specimens. Though all the spectral colors are possible, reds and greens are the most commonly seen colors, owing to the greater fragility of the finer layers responsible for the blues.

The ammolite itself is actually a very thin sheet, 0.5-0.8mm in thickness. The rest of the gemstone is made up from the fossilized ammonite on which this structure was preserved. As this organic gemstone in its natural state is soft and delicate, all of my finished pieces are treated with a layer of clear epoxy resin or capped with quartz to stabilize and protect them.***

Here is a unique color-changing ammolite/gem ammonite fossil stone, in blue and green hues with hints of purple. I have applied a thin layer of epoxy resin (to protect the soft gemstone) and wrapped it into a tree of life with 925 sterling silver wire.

This one-of-a-kind pendant measures approximately 2" high and weighs 12.8 grams.

I will include a soft and supple black or medium brown leather necklace with a sterling silver clasp, also handmade by me. Please note the color and length you would like (between 14" and 28", pendant is shown on a 20" necklace) at checkout and I will make it for you.

Please feel free to send me any questions. Happy shopping!
