SET OF FIVE WOODEN RUSSIAN DOLLS, STRIKINGLY PAINTED

This set of unusual little Matryoshka Russian dolls are hand painted using shades of blue ranging from a deepest midnight blue to a pale sky blue. The main flower and leaf motif that features on all of the dolls is a lovely turquoise blue featuring some dark gold edging.

Cream is also present and the intricate style of painting creates a lace-like effect that suggest the dolls are wearing traditional Babooshka shawls. The dolls have been varnished and so have a slight lustre to them.

The dolls look lovely presented on a kitchen dresser or in armoire and are just the right size to sit prettily on a bedroom dressing or bedside table.

They are also perfectly suitable for being played with and would make a wonderful stocking filler.

The dolls are in good condition and were carved and painted in St Petersburg, Russia.

Vital Statistics:

Doll one: 12 cm.
Doll two: 8.5 cm.
Doll three: 6 cm
Doll four: 3.5 cm.
Doll five: 2.5 cm.

The Fairytale Bit: Babooshka is a traditional Russian tale that tells the story of a very house proud lady who was forever cleaning her home. By chance, three kings passed by on horseback one evening. So impressed were they by her sparkling home that they invited her to see the baby Jesus. Babooshka was thrilled to be invited but begged to join them later, as she had housework to do. Eventually when her chores were done, she gathered a basketful of toys and set off. But when Babooshka arrived in Bethleham, the kings and the baby had gone. To this day, Babooshka still travels with her basket of toys, leaving them with children who have been good, just in case they might be Jesus.
