This Amish barn is southwest of Nappenee Indiana, I captured on a bright summer morning after a night of rain so the entire landscape was fresh and clean. These big barns are slowly disappearing form the landscape because when one it lost if it is replaced it will be with a modern farm building of some type but not one of the big timberframes built like they were a 100 years ago. Actually about a 100 years ago the last of this type of barns were built in this area. They began to show up around here as the area was settled around 1840. the first ones were much smaller and often incorporated into the larger ones built once more land was cleared creating the need to store more hay. Most of the earlier ones were "loose hay" barns and did become more specialized until after the Civil War. Then you began to see more designs for dairy operations among other things. The European immigrants brought the timberframe building skills that had been in use since the medieval times in continental Europe and England. The endless forests here supplied all of the building materials as they were cleared to create farmland to feed a growing country. The late artist Eric Sloane called them the Cathedrals of the Countryside and I think he got that right.
This print is done a wonderful matte finish paper with pigment based inks to create a wonderful long lasting fine art print for you to enjoy for years to come. The paper size is 8.5 by 11 inches and the image on it is about 7 by 9 inches so it will matt and frame out to a 9 by 12 which is a nice size for that special place!
