This nicely made vintage pin recalls a very early type of bicycle in use before the safety bicycle of the 1880’s. It was known as the Penny-Farthing (or hi-wheel) because of its resemblance to the profile of two old British coins, the larger penny and the smaller farthing. Considered somewhat awkward, if not outright dangerous, it quickly went out of fashion with the invention of the chain safety bike. It is often used as an emblem for the Victorian era, and is easily recognizable as an outmoded form of transportation.

The pin is, I think, sterling silver, though it is unmarked (no room?). It has intricate details, including a shaped seat, a three-dimensional foot pad, and handlebars. All parts are fixed so that there is no wheel movement. There is a simple locking c-clasp on the back. It has a handmade look, but there are no maker’s marks. It is in very nice vintage condition with a light patina. Hard to date because the only clue is the rollover catch, guessing 1950’s. It is a wonderful piece recalling Victorian bicycling history.
