Victorian Sewing Box with Mirror & Pincushion Treasure Chest

This beautiful Victorian sewing box is designed like an old treasure chest, with decorative metal straps on hinges extended over most of the lid. The inside is lined in a gathered caramel colored silken fabric with a mirror on the top and a pincushion built in to the bottom. I’m not sure what the piece placed on the diagonal is – it has a strip of fabric that’s kind of ruffled with silvery metal tacks holding the ruffles down. For pins and needles perhaps? The diagonal piece and the pincushion are covered in velvet. Pincushion and mirror have a red and white braided trim around the edges. In one corner of the bottom is a strip of leather placed diagonally as if to hold something in place.

The box measures 3 ½” high, 10” wide at the base and 8” deep, also measured at the base. I don’t see a maker’s mark and the bottom is covered in a black textured paper, which shows some wear here and there. Looks like oak – it’s a veneer or something handcrafted, as the little wear spots in back look handmade. The metal appears to be copper with a lot of patina. Lid is slightly rounded, with smoothly beveled corners. Fancy lockplate on the front, with a missing clasp and no key.

Great vintage condition overall – just some minor scratches and scuffs and a couple light nicks on the wood, a broken strip of fabric covering a hinge, a couple breaks in the fabric of the ruffled strip, and a couple of small spots on the fabric bottom. The mirror has black hazy lines running over most of it. The hinges are out of alignment just a tad so it sometimes closes “off” but is easily repositioned. I like to mention every conceivable flaw in the interest of thoroughness, but don't take this to mean that this box is not worthy -- it's truly a beauty, elaborate and wonderful!
