An 18" x 15" shield with The Red Welsh Dragon on black and yellow. Based on the design of the flag of St. David, this shield is made with 3/8" exterior plywood. Sometimes used to represent Wales by people outside of the nation, this flag is also used inside by Welshmen of non Welsh(particularly English) heritage as well as to commemorate Saint David, patron of the land. The center emblem is made from 3/16 luan plywood and is in the shape of The Red Dragon or Y Ddraig Goch. First recorded in AD 820 it is said to date back as far as King Arthur(his last name, Pendragon means head dragon). Y Ddraig Goch is often used to indicate anything welsh. The single sturdy handle on the back of this buckler style shield is 1 1/4" wide and has a 1" x 4" opening. The center and handle are held on by two 1/4" carrage bolts, making it both durable and easy to disassemble if repainting is needed. The back has no finish.

An alternate handle is available in a separate listing with a larger opening of 1 1/2" x 4" for those with larger hands.

SHIPPING prices are estimated. over charges will be refunded...

The modular construction of these shields makes them easily open to custom combinations of my standard designs. New or personal designs can also be attempted by custom request. Please keep in mind the methods of fabrication and assembly I use can limit complexity. My style and designs best represent the functional battle field shields which usually had simplified insignia.
