Black Metal work textiles from the Assuit region. This is in excellant condition. It measures approx 84 in. by 22 in.
They have been produced since the time of Ancient Egypt and became quite popular in the 1920s after King Tut's tomb was discovered. In 1925, geometric patterned Muslim shawls emerged in contrast to the Coptic Christian designs with animal and human figures.Assuit shawl, 1920s
Assuit cloth is a cotton mesh fabric embroidered with hammered metal pieces. The metal is wrapped around the mesh, and the ends are hammered under to hold the piece in place. (It makes me think of staples.) This type of cloth, produced since biblical times, is named for the Assuit region of Egypt, where it originated.
