Ready to ship.

A hand built ceramic bird feeder with two open sides for feeding. The birds love these feeders. They eat all the way to the bottom and the hop through from window to window. I recommend safflower bird seed. It is really healthy for the birds and the squirrels don't like it. The feeder is finished in a gorgeous metallic bronze glaze. It hangs from a steel cable that will not rust or break over time. The perch is a twig from my garden and there is a drainage hole in the bottom.

About the process:

There are a wide range of techniques one can choose in working with clay. Hand-building and throwing on the potter’s wheel are the primary methods I tend to use in my studio. The hand building method I used to create this piece involves using slabs rolled out (like a pie shell) on a piece of canvas. The wet clay is cut into the desired shapes and allowed to stiffen up until it can be handled. The pieces are then assembled and textured and slowly dried. I love the hand building process because it offers endless possibilities of shapes and design. Once a piece is completely dry, it is fired for the first time. This is called a bisque firing. The second and final firing is a glaze firing.

Think of glaze as a coating of glass which is fused to the surface of a clay piece during the kiln firing. Choosing a glaze to finish a piece is as important as the creating of the piece. Most potters have spent years developing and testing their own particular glazes that work well with their clay bodies and their kiln firing temperature. Not only does glaze add beauty to the piece, it helps to seal the clay so it becomes water proof and easy to clean.
