Rare and beautiful Ecuadorian PANO shawl from the 50's or before. These shawls of southern Ecuador and northern Peru were fashioned after the Spanish shawls of the turn of the century.
The width is 28 1/2 " and is hand-woven of Indigo ikat-dyed and super fine soft cotton. It feels like silk it's so smooth. The men wove the center cotton panel - then the shawl was passed onto a 'puntadora' who knotted (macramed) added cotton threads into a specific patterns - sometime with messages - this one has flower and birds. These were commissioned by 'novios' (boyfriends / engaged men) for their future brides.
I think this says ; Paloma Bianlali porque alejas porque me dejase me di le ......???
Well I tried to read it. Something like:
'Dove Bianlali because you move away because you abandon me - I give you....'
Well maybe he got the girl and maybe he didn't sounds like....

A romantic gesture anyway and this is a VERY ROMANTIC shawl.
I like to wear then hanging down for full effect - very very dramatic - but then are long - about 100" inches in total. You need to be tall - to wear it this way.
So throwing the fringe over the shoulder to show the patterns is how they wear them. The macramed fringe is starched so it lies flat and shows the patterns (hopefully not the message in this case). These were the DRESS shawls of southern Ecudaor - near Cuenca and were only worn for special occasions the reason why they survived this long. Although I bought them in the 90's and there were hard to find in good condition.

This is a very very very special shawl carrying the traditional culture of South America. ENJOY!!!
