This delightful china fish plate shows a spirited rainbow trout fighting the waves, surrounded by a swirling pattern of orange metallic luster and the shiny gold words, "Souvenir of Petoskey, Michigan."

The back is marked "D.E. McNichol, East Liverpool, O., WKT." The McNichol pottery operated in East Liverpool, Ohio, from 1892 to the 1920s.

The fish illustration is probably a decal, and is signed "Doré."

There is a fair amount of wonderfully vintage crazing, and the back side has three dimples in the glaze that are almost certainly the points where the plate was supported in the kiln.

Did you know? Petoskey is:
* The setting of several of the Nick Adams stories by Ernest Hemingway.
* The location where 50,000 passenger pigeon birds were killed each day in the late 19th century, prior to their complete extinction in the early 20th century.
* Famous for a high concentration of Petoskey stones, the state stone of Michigan.
* The boyhood home of singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens.

Perfect for the fisherman, Hemingway enthusiasts, and very dedicated Sufjan Stevens fans. Don't let this great fish plate be the one that got away!

7 inches in diameter (17.78 cm)
