This unusual chest started life as a lovely desk with spindle legs. Unfortunately, one of the legs had been broken in a way that made a stable repair impossible. The fact that it had such a classic form and five tidy drawers was key. I had a collection of animal knobs that I wanted to use. The Jungle Book was reborn as a chest with ball feet.
Those whimsical knobs were the inspiration for this piece. A very special friend made them some time ago, and sent me a boxful. The ones used here have old clip art pictures of elephants, camels and cheetahs encased in clear plexiglass hemispheres, like mystical creatures in tiny crystal balls. The color palette comes directly from them; hues of hide and fur, palms and grasses, sand and sky.
The patterns in the design repeat the curving forms of the chest's structure. i also left areas unpainted, featuring the warm tones and wood grain as part of the illustration. On the top surface, two elephants face each other, trunks raised in salutation. They wave leafy branches over a playful calf who mimics their gestures. The left side displays a desert scene. A camel baby tries his wobbly legs, leaning into the wooly protection of his mama. On the right side, a mother cheetah gazes across the grassy plain as a pair of spotted cubs peer from her shadow. The drawer fronts echo the leafy shimmer of palm fronds, a perfect setting for the magical knobs.
