Travel Journal from Vintage Book - Moving Ahead - for a Trip or Grand Adventure

This handmade journal, created from a vintage children's reader, would be great for to chronicle a trip or any new adventure being undertaken next year. I have carefully selected each element, from the paper torn by hand for the text block to custom marbled endpapers, in order to best showcase the character of the original book.

The bottom line:

- Dimensions: 7-1/2" x 5-1/2"
- Blank Pages: 72 (144 front and back) pages of Ivory 120 gsm (@ 80 lb) Italian Velata, tree free, acid free, hand torn for a soft deckled edge.
- Construction: Handbound using double-needle coptic stitch.
- Endpapers and signature covers: custom marbled paper
- Features: Vintage button closure

The details:

This journal was made from a children's reader, "Moving Ahead -- Easy Growth in Reading." My wonderful customer in New England rescued it from a thrift store on one of her many shopping ventures. The train and dirigible are aubergine. (Don't you love that word? "Eggplant" is so much more romantic in French. Do you think it tastes better as well?) I carefully deconstructed the covers so I could use the original book cloth to cover the inside edge so there's no exposed book board. .

Like all well-behaved journals, this coptic bound book lies flat so you can work peacefully with no wrestling.

The blank pages are made from acid-free 120 gsm (80 lb) Velata paper from the Cartier Magnani mill in Italy. This subtly textured, ivory paper holds up great to pencil, pen and markers and even light collage and paint, though it doesn't like to get very wet. The pages are all hand torn for soft, deckled edges rather than sharp machine cuts. I prefer the more "handmade" look this gives the finished product. I have a number of artists, as well as journalers, that keep returning for more books just because of the pleasure of using this paper!

The cover is paired with custom marbled paper which I created especially to compliment the book and use for the end papers and signature covers. The signature covers are also useful as tabs to glue or tape in loose ephemera.

The closure is from a vintage button and waxed Irish linen thread.

Shipping charge includes media mail shipment to US addresses and insurance. It's difficult to estimate international shipping. Rest assured if you are overcharged by more than $2 US, I will refund the difference.

Please read my shop policies for important information regarding shipping and returns.

Frequently asked questions about FreeRangeBookbinding

Default shipping for single small books is via USPS first class mail for $3.50, insured, with a tracking number, estimated to arrive in 5-7 business days. If you have a deadline, please upgrade to priority mail upon checkout.

All shipments of larger or multiple books are sent priority mail, estimated but not guaranteed to arrive in 2-3 days. You also have the option to upgrade to Express mail if you want a guaranteed delivery date from USPS. If you don't see an option you want, please contact me, and I will accommodate you.
The default for orders outside the US is for first class international shipping. First class takes 2 to 3 weeks to arrive in most locations, but may take longer if a shipment gets hung up in customs. If you would like to upgrade to priority mail, let me know, an I will figure out a cost for you.
Unfortunately, international shipping IS expensive, and books are heavy! While listings do not reflect this because of the complications of calculating varying weights of shipments, I WILL combine shipping and refund any amount you pay beyond the actual cost of shipping and insurance.

In the case of wedding and scrap books that come in a variety of sizes, Etsy only allows one shipping cost, so the cost shown is for shipping the largest book. Once again, I promise to refund any extra that you pay beyond the actual cost. I don't make money on my shipping.
